A Father’s Day Hymn
Father, we Thy loving children
Lift our hearts in joy today,
Knowing well that Thou wilt keep us
Ever in Thy blessed way.
Thou art Love and Thou art wisdom,
Thou art Life and Thou art All;
In Thy Spirit living, moving,
We shall neither faint nor fall.
Chocolat with Chocolate Afterwards
Our daughter had never seen the movie Chocolat before so we watched it again with her. I love this movie of the iconoclast atheist quietly blessing people, and Johnny Depp is a pleasure too, especially as a romantic interest. But add to that chocolate, and oh my, you’ve got a delicious classic. I had assumed … Read more
Our Son Leaves for Camp
Once more our son is off to be a camp counselor at Crystal Lake Camps. This is a healthy, nurturing place. I’m glad our son will be there because he both has a lot to contribute to it as well as a lot to gain from it. He will teach both archery and science. Andrew … Read more
Infographics: Organics Not GMO’s
I became a vegetarian over thirty years ago, so food issues have long been of interest to me. I do not want to eat drugs or poison, and I really hope others don’t want to either. GMO’s (genetically modified organisms) must be labeled or banned here like they are abroad, so we know what we … Read more
Used Curriculum Sale 2013
I was in charge of our homeschooling group’s Used Curriculum Sale again. We held it two years ago and again yesterday. We did not have the crowds we hoped for, but most vendors reported selling a third to a half of what they brought. I did particularly well because I had fourteen Great Courses for … Read more
Featured Artist: Robert Baribeau
This abstract artist has a show in New York City at the Allan Stone Gallery from now until July 29th, and I thought if you happened to be in New York City in the next six weeks, might want to catch this show. It spans 30 years of Robert Baribeau’s work. These works are considered … Read more
Movie Review: The Holiday
We just saw this 2006 film about two unhappy woman alone at Christmas who don’t know each other but do a house swap through the internet between England and L.A. in order to mutually get away from themselves. In the process they meet new people and things begin to look up. If you can overlook … Read more
Lunch at Bloodroot
I met my friend (and blog reader) Lorraine (see bottom photo) for lunch at the famous Bloodroot restaurant in Bridgeport, CT. I’ve been in Connecticut for over 20 years and had heard of this iconic feminist vegetarian/vegan restaurant since before I moved here, but I had never been before now. We really enjoyed ourselves and … Read more
Homeschool Prom 2013
Last night was the Homeschool Prom for northern Fairfield County. About 50 kids attended, and here are some photos of our daughter and her friends just before going. Most of these kids I have known since they were five. Our daughter (in the short blue dress) made the necklace herself, that she wore to the … Read more
My New Poem: Permission
Permission We are humbly obedient to the Mind that made us programmed as it were as God’s image and likeness as offspring of the divine Father/Mother like the apple does not fall far from the tree. As like produces like and as God is infinite all-powerful good: so are we. We cannot be otherwise. Never … Read more
We Replaced Our Evergreens with a Dogwood
Blog readers will remember that we lost two huge evergreens on our corner during hurricane Sandy. After some deliberation, we recently replaced them with a dogwood that has particularly large blossoms; they are bigger than my husband’s hand. Thank you to my oldest sister for the gift certificate to the nursery for this purpose!
Book Review: Wild
This book is about a troubled young lady who hiked 1,100 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail by herself. I found it to be a compelling read, although like her feet, it rubbed raw in places.
Photos of Virginia at New Pond Farm
We are enjoying having our oldest home between college and grad school. Here she is with us on a lovely evening last weekend at New Pond Farm.
Art by Robert Sauber
Robert Sauber is an accomplished artist who did the paintings of the New Pond Farm cows below. You can check Robert’s work out on his website here. New Pond Farm hosted him doing an art demo which I attended. Here are the highlights: First, I was intrigued that he neither uses linseed oil nor any … Read more
