I liked this book by Malcolm Gladwell and give it five stars. He debunks the theory that success is based on talent and instead shows how it is mostly the result of opportunities and hard work. “Outliers” are people that represent a phenomenon outside of everyday experience, but Gladwell shows that these exceptional people are … Read more
You may already know we have a lot of books in our small house. We stopped counting at 10,000. At that point my professional organizer friend insisted that for every book that entered the house one must also leave. I used to patronize library sales frequently but two years ago quit cold turkey; I was … Read more
I’m just enough of a foodie that I couldn’t resist showing you these photos of a great gourmet grocery on Montague Street in Brooklyn, between the Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn Borough Hall. Stores like these are one of the many pleasures of the city. What did I buy? A bag of plump, juicy Mount Rainier … Read more
It was a pleasure to see “Wicked” on Broadway in New York City. My sister was visiting from North Carolina for the Little People Convention and I came into the city to hang out with my her while her daughter (my niece) relished her scene. I had never before seen so many dwarves in one … Read more
My Twelve Year Old Brave Writer She’s hovering, constantly balancing dichotomies: Vigorous movement with deep stillness (literally jumping, with profound perception) Beautiful and serene with persistent agitation (like a magnificent landscape with mosquitoes buzzing) Warm and tenderly vulnerable but with defensively cynical walls up Fiercely glad she’s unique and different meanwhile feeling lonely and peerless … Read more
With exception of the one above done while waiting for my kids in their pottery class, the below doodles were done in church. It helps me concentrate and I enjoy them as pithy zingers later. I usually have a blank book with me to capture what inspires me. I recommend it!
I liked this book by Kathryn Stockett and give it 5 stars. This recently released novel is about black help in white homes in the early 1960’s. Through the voices of three women, one white woman in her early twenties, and two black maids, it clarifies the complexities of these relationships complicated by the climate … Read more
Happy Fourth of July! Flags, Freedom and Apple Pie: thank God we have them all! Enjoy!
Garlic Scapes are the flower shoots of the garlic bulb and farmers cut them off to encourage the bulb to grow plumper. I first bought local “scapes” from the Farmer’s Market in the last couple years, and this year my CSA is over run with them. To eat up the scapes we’re getting weekly, we’ll … Read more

My town’s name is Bethel, which means “House of God.” We liked that when we chose to live here. These pictures were taken in walks around Bethel. Enjoy…
These are New Pond Farm’s sheep and spring lambs. I have knit with their wool… and have many skeins left to do. Gotta love those lambs!
My husband and I are alone in our home with our children scattered around the globe. As I mentioned before, our oldest is in London as a graduation present from her aunt that lives there. My son, our middle child (14 years old), just flew yesterday to Alaska for a sea kayaking and glacier camping … Read more
I was drawn outside because I noticed that our driveway and the street were purple. (See photos below. They really were purple!) We had just completed yet another thunderstorm and the light was peculiar… intense sunset colors were forming in the east. The longer I watched, the deeper the eastern sky got until a few … Read more
Last night I was what my mom would have called “beside myself.” I was exhausted and would have gone to bed, but the sheets were in the laundry. I wanted to read, having searched for a moment to do so for weeks, but was too tired and restless. My husband and son were off at … Read more
