I’d give this book only two stars, although most of our (still critical) book discussion group would give it more than that. It is just not productive, and furthermore is frustrating because it is a lost opportunity to actually help someone.

This is a marvelous little book. I loved it and give it five stars. It chronicles a man’s first 16 months in the wilds of Alaska in the late 60’s.
The book above is only shown in this post because it prompted a great discussion from my book group; otherwise, I wouldn’t mention it at all.
If you are interested in science, you will be glad to have read this book. In general, Lab Girl is very well done.
This book will make you see that follow-through is the key component to mastery, and that is within everyone’s reach. Mastery is not a matter of talent, but one of learned and cultivated attention.
This is an interesting look at how geography has shaped history, and how it will continue to shape it in the future as well.
This book talks about how to reverse codependency with a spiritual dependency on God. And codependency is defined more widely than I thought of it before, to the point where it includes most of us at least in some way or degree.
Meanwhile, these books will get you out of your comfort zone, challenge your preconceptions, and get you asking fresh questions, which can lead to healing oppression and the myriad other problems of the 21st century.

This is a non-fiction book about the rescue of 350,000 precious manuscripts in Timbuktu from Taliban destruction. I give it three stars.

It is the perfect blend of a great writer and thorough researcher– with a direct and unadorned style– writing a full account of very remarkable, but likable people.
If you are interested in astronomy, or like detailed histories especially in the sciences, or you are interested in obscure women’s history, this book might be for you.
This biography of Alexander Von Humboldt is brilliantly researched, pragmatically told, and wildly relevant. I give it five stars.

This fresh book is thankfully neither self-satisfied nor the last word, but the beginning of a discussion on what it means to really follow Jesus, instead of the stale culture of most of modern Christianity.
