Fostering a new renaissance through creativity, authenticity, spirituality, and art
Two years ago, before most people had ever heard of it, I blogged about the book The Help. So I haven’t read it recently, but I loved the new movie rendition and have very few complaints to lodge against it. I can’t speak to what it is like to see this movie without having read … Read more
If I had known that this movie was about a recent young widow getting posthumous letters from her husband, I probably would have chosen something different to watch. This was a bit far fetched, and I really don’t find watching someone grieve entertaining. I wouldn’t agree that this is “the best romantic comedy in a … Read more
This movie is better in retrospect (four stars), than it was during the viewing (three stars.) It is about the choice adoption over abortion, and also about making peace and restitution with the past. These are difficult topics to portray and this movie does it in an interesting way.
This evening I saw the documentary Buck, which won the Sundance film festival this year. It is about the real life horse whisperer that the movie with Robert Redford by that name was modeled after. This is about parenting as much as horses, leading with respect and love, and never anger. Gently let expectations be … Read more
Even though I was recommended to see this film, I myself, would not recommend it to you. It is thought provoking, but I did not like nor agree with where those thoughts were led. This movie is searching for God within a Christian context, and does not find Him, in my opinion. (God is not … Read more
I loved this movie and give it a surprising five stars. We loved the book and this movie is entirely different than the book, but it was great none-the-less. Although often implausible (where did all that water go that gushed out of the bathroom, with the apartment tidy soon after, the envelope untouched, and the … Read more
In 1994, the Chauvet Cave in France was discovered with remarkable prehistoric cave paintings in it dating back 40,000 years. This treasure is being strictly protected by the French government, so the advent of them allowing a film crew in to see these masterpieces is unprecedented. This documentary not only shows incredible artwork but also … Read more
Not usually a big Woody Allen fan, I loved this new movie written and directed by him. It is about a Hollywood hack writer who dreams of being a great novelist writing in Paris, but his fiance has other ideas. Through the convenient device of an antique Bentley as the clock strikes midnight, he goes … Read more
Several of you blog readers have been after me to see this movie and I finally did. You are right, I give it five stars. We do not need to wait to write our own bucket lists and get going on the living involved in checking them off. Also, the wisdom here of being sure … Read more
I went to a preview screening of this documentary last night. It was just rough clips of an independent film in the making, interspersed with commentary, and concluded with a panel discussion. I can’t therefore review and rate this as a movie yet, but I’ll share what I learned, as well as some of my … Read more
It feels like an end of an era. It has taken my husband and I, together with our oldest two teenagers, three years to get through the complete seven season series of this TV show on DVD, checked out from our library. We absolutely loved it and are sorry it is over. We started it … Read more
This new film by Nickelodeon was refreshing in several ways. I liked how it is was mostly animated with real photography mixed in. I liked the fact that they intentionally used good vocabulary, making it more witty and intelligent, while still understandable in context. All the creatures were fascinatingly depicted, the artwork excellently done. Johnny … Read more
I really enjoyed this movie set in India about a child struggling with dyslexia and the art teacher who helped him overcome it with understanding, kindness, and compassion. Regardless of it’s slow pace, the subtitles, and long song interludes, I give it five stars. I was very touched by both what the boy went through … Read more
This is the most unusual film I’ve seen in quite a while. Animated for adults, in detailed but subdued watercolors, this intentionally slow paced, sweet, movie is totally NOT from Disney! Created by Europeans and Asians, with incredibly little dialogue, the artwork in this is remarkable, the caricatures are interesting and varied, while the story … Read more
Despite being dubious of the title and abhorring “forbidden affairs” (i.e. adultery), I ended up liking this movie and give it four stars. It is about a present day American fellow at the British Museum and a young professor at Oxford who are both experts in respective poets and who discover a connection between their … Read more
I enjoyed this touching Christian film and give it four stars. It has the feel of a good Christian revival: a temperamental white South African farmer’s life is turned around when he is led to accept Jesus and acquires a Bible. He sees proof of God listening to his prayers, and his Zulu workers do … Read more
I can’t decide if this movie is four or five stars. It is about Queen Elizabeth’s father King George VI who unexpectedly rose to the throne when his brother skipped off to marry an American divorce, Wallis Simpson. Problem was, he had a bad stutter, and especially with the advent of radio along with impending … Read more
