Aligned and Fully Happy
Are you more interested in life
or in your thoughts?
Just look around you,
and really see how
interesting everything is.
The grain of wood, the beetle’s iridescence.
The sluicing waterfall, the stalwart mountain.
The nubby beach towel, the puffy cloud.
Believing your thoughts is overrated,
for they can mislead as much as guide.
Squishy and sinking, they take us in
like quicksand, spinning us down a drain,
or whirling us around in a tizzy-whizzy,
going nowhere, like a water spout,
fizzing in every direction.
Enlightenment is more about
awareness than thinking.
But that is not the focus.
Noticing, relishing,
and being grateful
for all the good
that boundlessly
surrounds you,
delivers joy.
Contrary to what
you may imagine,
we don’t think our way
into wisdom and insight,
but observing carefully,
and cherishing every
detail and design
that is beyond us,
will bring alignment,
understanding, and
expansive happiness.

We act our way into right thinking.

This catches some onomatopoetic possibilities- “sloucing waterfall”- thus intensifying the joy to be discovered in matter.
Albert Schweitzer’s ” Out of My Life and Thought ” would teach us to avoid making a too strong dichotomy between life and thought. -
