National headline: Miracle: a Clean Refrigerator! You wonder, is “miracle” the right word to describe this? Well not for many of you, I’m sure. But this post is more about getting myself to do something I should do that I keep putting off, and I know most of us have that challenge!

Between snow storms here we had a few lovely days. I got the opportunity to get out and photograph some of our smaller steams as they head to Long Island Sound. I hope you enjoy them… it’s sleeting here right now…
This book was exceptional; I give this audio version five stars. This is a true story of the Supreme Court’s baffling decision in the Kelo case to uphold arbitrary seizure and demolition of anyone’s private property by eminent domain to be handed over to private developers. This remains the most controversial ruling by the Supreme … Read more

When I featured our meals last summer here and here, people liked it. Here is a sample of our “winter” food; it’s seasonally different; this time of year we’re enjoying tangerines and comice pears instead of watermelon and berries!

Mark Kurlansky has a definitely different take on food writing, more steeped in history and culture and macro-cosmic trend than most. Having enjoyed his two previous history-of-food titles, Salt and Cod, I was interested in seeing his views of 1930’s era food in this country,
These are the roses my valentine gave me. He was buying them from Trader Joe’s right when I was writing that needy poem a week ago (see here) and I think there is a lesson in that. There is always more good going on than we see. Intermittently this week I’ve tried to photograph these … Read more

This was the view from my office windows Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. I live right downtown but you’d never know it to look out my office windows. My third floor office, in our former attic, looks out on these glorious treetops.
I do a lot with the inter-library loan system both for myself and my homeschooling kids. It’s great! I can “shop” for books from my home and they come in from all over to my Bethel library two blocks away. Right when I read reviews online, I can ask for the book without even getting … Read more

I am the “flower committee,” so here are some photos

Above and below see what my Valentine’s cards look like this year.
(I was intrigued with the idea of hearts woven…)
Anyway, I made this one for all of you!
I hope you have a great day full of LOVE!
A “golden birthday” is the one birthday when you turn the number you were born on. So since my youngest turned 13 today on the thirteenth, it was her “golden birthday.” As of today, all three of my children are teenagers; it hardly seems possible! We had a wonderful day… Last night, our daughter saw … Read more
Dull I feel pathetic poor and covetous surrounded by affluence and the freedom it affords. Pressing my nose against the window standing empty on the outside wallowing beyond desire – bleak and inadequate, ponderously paltry… I senselessly strive to be legitimate in the face of self satisfaction wanting to be generous with only immateriality to … Read more
