“True fact: we like to control things. It’s in our nature. But having to control everything ultimately zaps our energy and causes anxiety, because it’s simply not possible. I realize that so much of my own stress when it occurs is caused by wanting everything to go a certain way. It’s exhausting, yes? Since the opposite of control is allowing, lately I’ve been in the practice of consciously allowing at least one thing every day. Allowing my day to unfold in a way I didn’t expect (which might also mean not finishing everything on my list). Allowing someone to have feelings or reactions I wish they didn’t have without having to fix them. Allowing myself to have feelings I wish I didn’t have without having to bury them. Allowing my creative process to take an unanticipated turn. Allowing clients to have their own opinions, even when they frustrate me. Etcetera. Allowing requires surrender and a certain trust that everything will work out, which is tough to conjure. But I’ve found when I do consciously allow in moments where I feel a tight hold, I feel so much more at peace. GO FIGURE.”
