Twelve 8"x8" Black and White Explorations in Line

I focused in the 8″x8″ black and white pieces solely on line, with a little attention to composition. In the last two photos you can see the implements I used– all sorts of pens, markers, crayon and graphite, together with brushes of varying sizes. I enjoyed painting with that huge brush with dry paint on these small papers. Some I worked wet-in-wet to get a range of grays. Some lines I made with my right hand, which were more controlled and modulated, and some of my favorite lines I made with my left hand, and those lines are more primal and interesting. I gave attention to “breathing space,” some of these works have more or less of it, achieved in different ways.

I find it helpful to change it up and give myself some strictures of limitation to explore more options in my artwork. Black and white is one such restriction, but keeping things to line ruling out an emphasis on  shape, pattern, or texture, is another. What you realize is that when you remove so many of the possibilities, the options are still endless.

This is a peak into my process of how I develop my visual language as an artist…

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
