When we were on Sanibel Island these lightning whelk seed cases littered the beaches. They were fascinating in shape and texture and caught light differently at different times of day. I loved their intricacy, and their spikey cast shadows.
I was intrigued by them even more when I found some live lightning whelks with their gorgeous shells and creatures inside, as seen below. I marveled at how many countless whelks were released into the world in each one of these copious seed cases.
Isn’t nature amazing? Even these cast away cases are beautiful. That such a little jelly-like creature makes both that magnificent shell and these complex seed cases, makes me feel awed. Think by comparison what we care capable of doing!
