Things to Do with Herbs

If your garden is bursting with fresh herbs as much as ours is, I thought you might appreciate some ideas of what to do with them. (And if you aren’t growing them, I hope you still buy them!) Here’s enough ideas of what to do with fresh herbs to get you started using up these luscious benefits of the season:
- make pestos of all kinds and use on pasta, sandwiches, or as a garnish in soups
- chop herbs with fresh garlic and a fresh chili pepper to make a great overnight marinade for protein
- make an herb salad to accompany fish
- put lots of cilantro in guacamole or salsa
- Fry thyme and parsley leaves for a flavorful, edible garnish
- Add herbs to fruit cobblers and crisps
- Whip herbs into salted butter and put on veggies, bread, or protein
- Garnish eggs and omelettes with chives or chervil, and try adding any combinations of herbs in those eggs or omelettes.
- Add sage to brown butter
- Add chopped herbs to bread or focaccia dough when mixing
- top yogurt or ricotta with herbs, honey, and nuts for breakfast
- stir herb puree into risotto or rice just before serving
- add herbs to fruit salads
- put mint in smoothies or lemonade
- Freeze minced fresh herbs on a cookie sheet and then transfer to ziploc bag. Store in the freezer to use in winter cooking.
- add fresh oregano to Greek salads
- add herbs to fish and bake in parchment
- add fresh herbs to any vinaigrette salad dressing recipe
- put minced dill in your egg salad or on your salmon burger
- make Green Harissa which uses lots of parsley and cilantro
