Fostering a new renaissance through creativity, authenticity, spirituality, and art
These shows tend to be highly representational, but I doggedly keep submitting abstraction. My work sticks out as a bit alien, painting ideas instead of things, but I hope to make room for others to be more adventurous and creative.
The title of this conceptual painting is a quote from a snippet I like from the King James version of the Bible in I Peter 5:10. Don’t we all want that?
I’ve been brewing and marinating on this idea since the fall when I did my painting titled “Bracken” (see here), and I finally took the time to do it. I love the result, with its overall complexity, intense color, and the strong swirling design of the pods.
The idea for this painting germinated from the intro to a favorite show All Creatures Great and Small, which traverses winding, hilly roads toward town and home. Here too in Connecticut roads are undulating and indirect, surrounded too by foliage and fields
The March the challenge was to paint a still life with a pattern in it. In this post you can see the one I did that was shared yesterday. It is 19″x25″ and done in pastel. I had fun doing it– especially the technical background
Isn’t spring palpable, so pulsing with life? This painting tries to capture that nascent emergence out of dormancy.
I had the privilege of being in a group chat with Zaria Forman this week. I have long known about her incredible large scale pastels of icebergs, but I was delighted to find out she’s a wonderful person too– very real and forthcoming.

I loved these sinuous roots over the rocks in the Cathedral Woods on Monhegan and I have seen them in many different types of light
The head is wagging back and forth while pushing forward with strength and tenacity.
A swirl of making mental adjustments, adjusting to external factors, assessing and abstractly adapting. That’s what’s being expressed here.
To counter the oppressive darkness of the news, this new painting of mine refers to a phrase from Psalms 30:5: “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
I thought of expanding opportunities like the northern lights but more exaggerated and with complex light coming out of darkness. There are lots of reasons to believe in darkness and limitation these days, but light and effulgence always win out.
