Consider Yourself Kissed book review

Since my last book review, I’ve read five books, all of which seemed more promising than this one, but that I didn’t like enough to blog about. I don’t remember who recommended this one to me, but it was my last unread library book, so I decided to go for it, before reading titles that I own that are more clamoring for my attention.

I think I was misled by the title here to think this would be a light rom-com, which it is not. Part way through, I didn’t want to deal with it– too much messy Brexit English politics– and almost quit. However, by the end, it felt like a rare, honest story, which didn’t either gloss over, nor over dramatize everyday struggles.

This book does begin with a couple getting together, but it is about the following ten years, with the complications of family life, including young children, over laid with the political muddle the world is in. It is not a particularly fun read, nor is it that triggering. Instead, it depicts the average struggles upper middle class families go through to give everyone what they need. This is particularly difficult for women and mothers, which makes that facet all the more essential.

I read this when I thought I wanted diversion, and got a big dollop of messy coping instead. That rang more true, and maybe was more helpful? Life can be chaotic and this story leans into that. This book isn’t on most folk’s radar (unlike the things I plan on reading next), but I thought you might want to know about it. I give Consider Yourself Kissed a lukewarm 4 stars.

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
