This majestic copper beech tree at Laudholm nature preserve in Wells, Maine, was enormous. I set up right up close to this magnificent tree to paint the ancient trunk and the glorious back lighting.
Many people came by to chat with me while I painted it. One man’s sister had been married at the base of this tree. Another was worried about the tree’s future, as apparently beech trees are recently being threatened with disease. Laudholm even took my photo painting it for their newsletter (see first photo below – don’t you love that photo?).
This painting was done with some new techniques in pastel, and is 18″x24.” You can see the entire work above and close up details of it below.
