A “Golden Shovel” Poem
To stop being a puppet of circumstance,
begin to practice failure.
Wade beyond the swamp
of your useless fears
to find the bouyant bliss
beyond happiness.
Have one star,
dependable and bright,
for wishing on,
because we cannot
separate ourselves
from the serendipitous
wildness of the world.
For example,
if you could look inside me now,
you’d find fields of zinnias,
yearning and reaching.
by Polly Castor
Note: The “Golden Shovel” is a modern poetic form invented by Terence Heyes, and this is the one I wrote recently in that painting workshop I attended. Google the Golden Shovel and write one of your own. Be flexible with the rules. Mine here, the order is reorganized. I had never written one before but it is super easy.

7 a.m. today: An Explosion!
somewhere Out There
in our cozy neighborhood.
Within a minute:
numerous sirens, trucks with horns blaring!
I ran outside to see various vehicles
pouring up our hillside road,
Smoke and flames from our neighbor’s roof!!
I had the thought: could this be part of a dream
I might be having, not yet quite awake?!Within the hour, the whole picture changed…
Fire put put, family safe, neighbors calmed,
Order being restored!Whew!!!
(Perhaps it was a dream…hmmmmm)
