Blue Shadows on Snow

Blue shadows
look like piecework in an art quilt
or thin indigo washes in a watercolor
that left unpainted paper
for snow.
The brilliant white
dazzles blindingly bright,
bare, but warm in the golden sun
compared with the coolness
of the softly sheltered silhouettes.
Contours of moist cobalt
contrast with bristled brush and bark,
sepia and grey
complimenting in a way
that makes the shadow
more of a feature
than the solid object in the light
while the gushing inky tributary
takes whatever it can carry.
