A Sand County Almanac is a lovely little book of well observed nature writing. In a time where the environment is in peril from bad policy and practices, it was refreshing to read a beautifully written book about cherishing nature, which didn’t have such threatening overtones. This was written in 1949 and has since sold over 2 million copies for good reason.
He says you need to know something in order to grieve it, and I realize that is why so many people can ignore the plight of nature right now, because the loving of it wasn’t already firmly in place. This author loves each bird and feather, helping us to do so as well. It is peace-giving to read his soothing, descriptive, appreciative words.
I highly recommend this tiny volume, a chapter a night, right before bed. I give it five stars.
