New Poem: The Covenant of Today

The Covenant of Today

The breeze clatters the leaves
across the pavement,
swirling in eddies
before scuttling them along,
first meandering, then side swept.
Another shower launches from the twigs
trickling toward the ground,
each leaf hang-gliding effortlessly,
sliding down slanted sunbeams
as if tossed on target
like golden wedding confetti
or a sparkling veil
dressing up a graceful gown.

Bolstered by tree trunk columns
shards of dappled stained glass
glow serenely in the vaulted clearstory
chattering among themselves,
and murmuring their ascent.
Branches reach for the heavens
reverently clasping hands
arching cathedral-like, holy,
as fingertips touching in prayer.

The wind swells melodious
like a crescendoing organ
shaking the rafters,
scattering more euphoria
and sanctifying the covenant of today
with the rapture of beauty,
the promise of faithfulness,
and the bliss of hallowed purpose
shared as distinct wholes
brought together in unity.
