Totally Dependent

Although we grow some of
our fruits and vegetables,
we did not breed the seeds.
Although we cook and prepare
most of the food we eat,
we did not bring it from afar,
nor harvest the grain,
nor fish the protein,
nor cultivate our dairy
or process our cheese.
Although we sew
some of our own clothing,
we did not weave the cloth
nor grow the fiber.
Although we avail ourselves
of the sun’s electricity,
we did not build or devise
our solar panels,
nor do we maintain the grid.
Although we drive cars,
we did not forge the metal,
assemble the vehicles,
nor drill or ship
the gas and oil.
Although we are law abiding,
we did not conceive of
or legislate those laws,
nor do we enforce them.
Although we produce
some art and poetry,
we are still blessed
by the creations of others.
Although we utilize
mathematics and language,
we did not discover
or originate either one.
Although we rely on
our computers and smartphones,
we did not invent the technology,
and are clueless how they work.
Although we like to think
we are independent individuals,
masters of our own destinies,
we are totally dependent
on help beyond ourselves.
And that’s true even before
we even start praying
to a higher power.
