I have learned in Christian Science that human will has no place within the divine control of Spirit. Spirit does not share its strength with human will. It can seem to “mesmerize and mislead,” but divine wisdom will always have the upper hand.
The founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, makes clear that “will-power is capable of all evil,” and that our problems are “in proportion as ignorance, fear, or human will governs” us. She says that human will makes and works a lie, hides harmony, is destructive, and cannot govern aright. Lets not be so impressed with it.
“Human will… is to be condemned… Human will-power…produces evil continually… “(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 144:14)
Instead, Truth and Love are the proper and enduring motive-powers. They quiet fear and silence human will.
Jesus famously said, “Not my will, but thine be done.” By relinquishing his will, the Spirit was present within him– even through the most hopeless looking challenge– and that approach was victorious over the will of the mob.
Some act like they can mock divine Principle, but that approach is built on the sand and is easily eroded. “Principle is imperative.”
“Will — blind, stubborn, and headlong — cooperates with appetite and passion. From this cooperation arises its evil. From this also comes its powerlessness, since all power belongs to God, good.” (Ibid p. 490:4)
“Human will must be subjugated.” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 118:1 (only))
Let’s be careful we are not guilty of human will, regardless of whether other people are or not. Success does not go to the side that out-willed the other. Remember that by definition, the willful forfeit. Success is always on the side of Truth, Love, and wisdom. There are times when it looks otherwise, but as Easter morning attests, it is not over until Love and altruistic Principle win.
Meanwhile, “it is self-evident that we are harmonious only as we cease to manifest evil or the belief that we suffer from the sins of others.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 346:13–15)
I find hymn 501 verse 2 comforting:
Though storm or discord cross my path
Your power is still my stay,
Though human will and woe would check
My upward-soaring way;
All unafraid I wait, the while
Your angels bring release,
For still Your presence is with me,
And You do give me peace.
