There is so Much (New Poem by Polly Castor)

There is so much, gratitude poem, Thanksgiving poem

There is so Much

They say be grateful
but there is so much–
consider those diligently dedicated worms
breaking up the soil, so a plant can grow;
kindness and care is everywhere,
but do we notice it?
How about that wrapper on the bread,
a regular miracle in an ordinary day.
Or salt, and all it took for that
to be imagined in the first place,
let alone created, even before
transforming something else
into deliciousness.
Or leaves falling
encouraging us to let go too,
and welcome in a season
of rest and recharging
like margins in a book
giving us some space
to assimilate and process
the wonders of language and rhythm,
tongues and eyes, gills and trunks.
Wings and stories flutter, soaring overhead,
stars shine, and satellites bounce back
that message about gratitude
and how wirelessly
we are programed for it
and can’t help but experience how
oh my gosh there is so much
capacity–
it is all so full
of love and effort,
neediness and fulfillment,
fruition and generosity,
sanctity and compensation.
Mattresses and pillows,
tires and axles,
stoves and pans,
flutes and accordions,
boots and sandals,
numbers and notes,
children and parents,
sweetness, strength, sagacity,
vanilla and chocolate,
science and faith,
yellow and red,
gladness and joy.
Impossible to ever express
gratitude enough and cover it all,
like your gregarious smile,
and a baby’s fist clutching your finger,
like soap and silk, raisins and baklava,
journals and books, paints and clay,
tables and chairs, coziness and laughter,
assurance, effulgence, vigor, and progress–
way, way more than plenty,
and totally enough for everyone.
