Two New Impressionistic Cityscapes in Pastel

Two New Impressionistic Cityscapes in Pastel

I have thoroughly experienced being alone in a quiet city, even before a pandemic, so I can imagine what it must feel like this last year of quarantine. This new painting above, titled Alone in the City depicts that. It is 12″x18″ and done in pastel. I am really happy with the composition of this one, with the patterned buildings, reverberating in dense and vertical shapes, the lavender sky, the quartet of greens moving your eye around, and the red bits circling the figure, drawing you into their experience.

When looking at reference material for the above painting, I was reminded of a very opposite scene in the city, full of traffic and cars honking, echoing in a canyon of buildings. I remember being fascinated with the abstraction in the traffic when seen from blocks away, and wanted to capture that here. I  haven’t been in NYC now in quite a while, but lived there for seven years back in the day. Honestly, I’m not missing all the hubbub. How about you?

I painted this one below of rush hour congestion as a counterpoint to the quiet one above. I’m calling this one Looks Like I’ll Be Late, and it is also 12″x18,” and done in pastel.

Both are very different than the forests I’ve been tromping in lately!

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves. I so enjoyed last evening’s presentation for MAA. Thanks for sharing the list of prompts and the general philosophy of abstract painting. I’m eager to try it with my watercolor class when we resume meeting together again in March.

Both of these cityscapes are compelling, but I’m especially drawn into Looks Like I’ll Be Late, and the ebullient jumble of vehicles. All of your work is eye and mind popping. I love it!
