Aggregate (pastel) by Polly Castor

Teaching my Adventures in Pastel workshop two weekends ago wetted my appetite to do a really textural painting. So I decided to do a really big one! This painting, titled Aggregate, is shown in its entirety above, and in details below. It is large: 40″x28,” and as desired, extremely textural.

An abstract conceptualist work, “aggregate” means a gathering, a collection, a whole formed of disparate elements, a loosely compacted mass of fragments, unity among separate units, to form or group into a cluster, a sum total, an overall composite. This painting attempts to show this, and I love how it describes the word in all phases, noun, adjective, and verb.

It is my first abstract conceptualist painting that I used a photo reference as the launching pad, while intentionally not staying very close to it. The color palate is a departure for me as well, and was chosen to serve the theme more than my taste, which would usually choose brighter, clearer tones.

Contact me if you are interested in buying the original. If you want either prints or merchandise with this painting on it, go to my online gallery here.

And meanwhile, I’d love to hear your comments below. Do you like it?

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
