New Poem: Shine it Away

Poetry by Polly Castor, Shine it Away Poem, Poem about light and darkness

Shine it Away

Imagine a dark room
behind a closed door
but the hall light is on
and when you open the door…

Does the darkness flood out into the hall?
Does it extinguish the light?
Does it have the upper hand and take over?
Is the darkness unstoppable and fearsome?

Or does the light blithely encroach into the darkness
immediately displacing and unquestionably obliterating it?
Doesn’t light always win by making make the truth discernible?
Isn’t light the potency that darkness completely lacks?

Without barriers, can darkness continue to fester?
Let us fling open all the doors.
Let us be that hall light wherever we go.
What chance does darkness then have?

So whatever darkness represents to you,
realize it can only exist in isolation
and that you can expose it
and shine it away.
