I had the privilege of being in a group chat with Zaria Forman this week. I have long known about her incredible, large-scale pastels of icebergs, but I was delighted to find out she’s a wonderful person too– very real and forthcoming. I thought you would want to check out her work too.
You can see her website here, as well as watch her paint here (that’s about 150 hours you are watching in quick timelapse). Click here to see her TED talk.
In this quick video you can hear her talk about what she’s trying to achieve.
She is committed to documenting climate change in pastel, and to show the beauty and fragility of the earth.
The colossal size of these (she’s working on her largest now: 25 feet long!) is a bit of a framing nightmare, and costs a lot. However, she has one show a year and they all immediately sell out at high prices. Her next show in in Seattle so they’ll be shipped from the east coast. Additionally, she works on a smooth, unsanded surface, and works from the top left corner down to the bottom right corner. She uses exclusively Unison Colour pastels (remember I visited them in England: see here).
See some of her work in this post, and follow her on Instagram here.
