Constraint is a Catalyst for Creativity
Endless possibilities bewilder
while narrowed options focus
fresh opportunities.
Limit yourself to just
do a painting
with red and green
suddenly we are wondering:
Christmas colors,
or fuchsia and sage,
baby pink and chartreuse,
maroon and lime,
teal and tomato,
rust and forest,
or cadmium and cactus?
More green than red
or mostly red
with a little green?
Parameters explode thought
in a way that endless alternatives
stymie, sputter, and stall.
Where do you begin?
By imposing some curtailment,
using only this medium,
or only that subject,
with these methods,
but not those,
we are freed
to explore and discover.
We think we chafe at restrictions
but when we don’t have them
we sketch them in to our benefit
so we can start considering
all the infinities
on the head of each pin.
There is so very much
that you can do
within whatever constraints
you are already faced with.
Instead of feeling trapped,
frustrated, or downcast,
turn instead to be
inventive, resourceful,
and run rampant
with imaginative play.
