As soon as the new website was launched on Saturday, we headed to Boston for Annual Meeting Weekend, after picking up our daughter’s new green glasses on the way, which you can see in the photos below. Saturday evening we went to a Gospel concert in Symphony Hall because our friend and host was singing in it; what a burst of jubilant sound that was, and Symphony Hall, which I have often heard of but have never been in, was lovely. Sunday was church and a meeting of addresses, and today was our church’s Annual Meeting.
The Christian Science Church holds its Annual Meeting on a Monday early in June each year, but lately it has been virtual via the internet, so it was a special treat to come together in Boston again this year. It just so happened that we were ushered up to the front row and were televised on the big screen as well as on the internet, which we only know about from folks states away telling us later. We were oblivious of that at the time, but the blessing of being up there so close, besides a good view and photo opportunities, was that when we sang the hymns, all those concordant voices coming from behind us were just glorious. And especially wonderful in such a big crowd is saying the Lord’s Prayer together. The impressive organ is a special treat too.
Here are some of the things that struck me among what was talked about during the meeting:
- Christian Science is self energizing!
- Paul left behind a whole flawed nature to be an advocate for Truth.
- “The greatest wrong is but the suppositious opposite of the highest right.” Mary Baker Eddy
- Someone said, “I don’t know why everyone isn’t a Christian Scientist, all you have to do is renounce self!”
- You’ve built this church, now what are you going to do with it? Answer from your heart.
- Among other things, several spiritual healings were shared: a healing of the effects from a motorcycle accident, a healing of Multiple Sclerosis by overcoming the fear of death, cervical cancer was healed during the fifth month of pregnancy, and a woman who was unable to walk now can.
- Transform things into thoughts!
- It is not the size of the church membership that matters, but the size of the concept of church in each member that makes the difference.
- Unity is spiritual cooperation.
- Live with a sense of the actuality of God.
It was good to meet new friends and see old ones. I saw two dear people I haven’t seen in twenty years, one from Texas and the other from California. It was wonderful to introduce our youngest daughter to some of our friends and mentors. On the way home tonight she said that it was great to see me “in my element.” I’m glad she enjoyed herself; it was good to have her there with us. The whole weekend was great fun. I am thankful our church is solidly on the right track, and blessedly free of drama and dissension. Onward and upward!
