My New Landscape Pastel Step by Step

Summer Shade with Lyla (pastel) by Polly Castor

I did this pastel last weekend. It is 11” x 14” and titled Summer Shade with Lyla.  I took care of baby Lyla one morning a week last summer and this is where we hung out. I loved this view of New Pond Farm, so when I was invited to paint something for their up-coming invitational art show starting next weekend, I immediately knew what I would paint.

I thought it might be interesting to blog readers to see my process step by step, so I have included those photos below.  First I do a sketch, then the sketch is wet with mineral spirits, followed by finding my lightest lights and darkest darks. After that, I do the underpainting, followed by the painting.

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves.
