My husband is a Pixar fan and he was the driving force behind seeing this film. We enjoyed it. I’d give it four stars; the stunning animation was done so well you almost forgot it was animated, and the storyline, while including some far fetched witch’s magic, was interesting, full of puns, and set in a Viking era. Unlike most, this is a Disney film with both parents present and accounted for, as well as integral to the story.
The movie is about an unconventional girl who struggles to get her mother to understand she must forge a different path and that it is okay for her to do so. As an unconventional girl myself, with two unconventional daughters, I could relate to this on many levels. She wants her mother to change but finally realizes the only thing you can change is yourself. And that mama bear does defend her cub!
The ending is refreshingly different too for Disney… a girl supported in embracing independence and authenticity… without any coupling in sight! Wow, how many decades have we waited for that? The last line: “Our fate lives within us. You only need to be brave enough to see it.”
