This incredible novel was perfect for reading by candlelight while our power was out over Halloween.  By far the most imaginative and unique book I have read in a long time, I give it five stars.  I would recommend it heartily to anyone, even though it is peopled with magicians, illusionists, tarot card readers, manipulators and contortionists – i.e. the type of characters I usually would not pursue.  The tale is more sweet than sinister, regardless of the fact that there is a serious competition going on.  The illusions are real.  The descriptions of venues are inventive and vividly fascinating, revealing new wonders all the way to the end. The story takes place between 1873 and 1903, in a circus that opens at dusk and closes at dawn, moving from place to place with no formal itinerary.  Matter isn’t what it seems, and after all, love is what matters.
