Working in an artist’s journal when I am too busy to paint larger full concept works remains an important part of my process. In here I try out new ideas, and use the mediums of ink and watercolor that I don’t often employ in my more serious work. It is a free wheeling space where things can be tried and it doesn’t matter whether they fail or not.
I really like this new artist’s journal that I am working in that I got for Christmas from my sister. It has very thick, smooth, extra heavy weight pages that take ink and light watercolor very well. I’ve long been on a hunt for the perfect artist journal. I like some spiral bound ones with mixed media paper for acrylic work, but this new one is my favorite bound one. After using a variety of books, the hunt is over and this is definitely one I’ll buy again and again. It is a Stillman & Birn Zeta Series Archival Sketchbook Softcover 8×10 and you can see it here.
Give it a try for your next series of experiments and doodles!
