As I mentioned here, after studying a lot of artwork featuring the color red, I wanted to paint some pastels in red. I started with these two small ones. Both of these are 9″x12″ and done in pastel. People think pastels need to look chalky or light, and this is not the case! Red is interesting to work in since it reads as a mid value, so somehow you need to bring in other wide-ranging values, in order for it to pop.

Your paintings are so beautiful! When I work with pastels the chalk dust spreads all over the paper smudging and ruining the work. Is that because I need better pastels or is there a technique to avoid that? Thank you!
