Best Books of the Year (Reading Challenge Summary)

Best books of 2025

I read 68 books this year, ten of which were art and cookbooks, 13 were other non-fiction, and the rest were novels. I listened 22 on audio. I only read one book over 500 pages, and I read some lighter stuff this year, although my favorites were not those.

I gave 19 books five stars this year. Above you can see my three favorite novels (book reviews on this blog are here, here, and here) and my two favorite nonfiction (book reviews here and here). I recommend these and also they would make great gifts.

If you read along on our book challenge of one per week, let me know if you’d like anything different than the form we used this year below.

And please tell us in the comments, what were your favorite reads of the year?

  1. Thank you, Polly! One of my favorites not only this year, but of all time, is Theo of Golden. Our book club read this self published book by Allen Levi several months ago. It left us all feeling hopeful and wanting more of Mr. Levi’s excellent life perspective. He has since been picked up by Simon and Schuster and is working on his second novel… Ellen of Golden.

  2. I read the Frozen River. I loved it. I just finished The Fort Bragg Cartel – Drug Trading and Murder in the Special Forces by Seth Harp. I found this book to be shocking. A disturbing perspective on the Special Forces.
I am part way through Milena and Margarete – a Love Story in Ravensbruck. It is all about survival in the only female concentration camp in Germany.
I read mostly all non-fiction but once in a while a fiction book will sneak in.
