How to Treat the Stranger (Quotes from Prayerful Readings)

What the Bible says about how to treat the Immigrant

Here are some quotes we pondered during a church service recently, when focusing our prayer on deported immigrants:

From the Bible KJV:

I John 3:11

“this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”

Ex 23:9

“thou shalt not oppress a stranger: for ye know the heart of a stranger, seeing ye were strangersin the land of Egypt.”

Lev. 19:33if , 34 (to ;)

if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him.But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself;

Zech. 7:8–10 the (to ;)

the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying,Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; …

Luke 3:2–6 2nd the, 10–14 (to ;)

“… the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; …”

13. I John 3:17

“whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?”

18. Matt. 25:35–40

For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

And from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy:

“If the soft palm, upturned to a lordly salary, and architectural skill, making dome and spire tremulous with beauty, turn the poor and the stranger from the gate, they at the same time shut the door on progress.”

“The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.”

“If we turn away from the poor, we are not ready to receive the reward of Him who blesses the poor.”

“if the unselfish affections be lacking, and common sense and common humanity are disregarded, what mental quality remains, with which to evoke healing from the outstretched arm of righteousness?”

“The test of all prayer lies in the answer to these questions: Do we love our neighbor better because of this asking?”

“If selfishness has given place to kindness, we shall regard our neighbor unselfishly.”

“Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power.”

“Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God.”
