Winter Solstice (New Poem by Polly Castor)

Winter Solstice poem, by Polly Castor

Winter Solstice

The shortest day of the year
teeters and tips on its pivot point
toward a blessed season of illumination,
where more and more light
chases off the gloaming,
more and more radiance
sends packing the lateness of the dawn,
more and more lustrously glowing gleams
remove the dense cloak of early twilight–
and our dormancy will slowly recede,
to be replaced incrementally,
by increasingly large slivers
of glittering luminescence.
Our wallowing blanket of gloom
will be shined away
by the freshly exciting brilliance
of daylight vanquishing the night.
We stretch and unfold
like meek plants emerging
from a shroud of tight soil,
tentative at first,
but with circadian clarity,
pushing hesitantly forward
through the thick darkness,
and reaching out to unfurl
and bask in the resumed,
lengthening, effulgence of the sun,
as the marble ball of the earth
continues to rotate on its axis,
and as the year rolls around
repeating its preprogramed,
circumnavigating path.
Our weary load is lightened.
Our souls expand and brighten.
Let the festivities begin.

Thank you for this poem. The art balances the ideas you shared. Does the art work have a name?
