The Calm Before the Storm (pastel) by Polly Castor

I’m not interested in being a portrait artist, but I always desire to communicate the spiritual essence of things. This painting is about the fact that while Jesus knew he was to be killed the next day, this is how he spent the evening before: loving, caring, and being an example of service. I tried to capture his grace even in the face of what was soon to come, the intimacy of his loosened garments, the strength of his humility, and the sweetness of his invulnerable, tender purity.

The 8″x10″ painting in pastel above is the result. See some close-up details of it are below.

Please think about this as we approach Good Friday…

I work to amplify good wherever I find it. I love color, texture, beauty, great ideas, nature, metaphor, deliciousness, genuine spirituality, and exploring new territory. I encourage authenticity, nurture creativity, champion sustainability, promote peace, and hope to foster a new renaissance where we all are free to be our most fulfilled, multifaceted, and terrific selves. A powerful message. Thank you for getting it out there.
May we never forget to bless others, right in the middle of their mal-treatment. To look beyond the immediate material presentations of evil, in all its subtleties, to the ever-present fact: we are all children of the One Divine Intelligence. We have dominion over The Illusion.
