Red Light Green Light poem by Polly Castor

Red Light, Green Light

That hunch,
the gut knowing
that yes,
I should go ahead with this
but absolutely not with that
is not based on preconceptions.
Instead, I respond
to hinted impressions,
which are sometimes
loud urgings,
but often only
indistinct inclinations.
I walk by faith
and not by sight,
following where
spiritual sense leads,
clueless how
it will work out,
but understanding
from experience
that it will,
if I’m obedient to
the inner listening
which points to
the right or the left,
to the yes or the no,
to the stop or the go.
And each time
it is a marvel to me
that intuition
wins the day
and that somehow
I could identify
in advance what
advice to give myself
and what course of action
will bless the most
so that my needs
are met.
I feel my way,
watching for
signals of clarity
direct from the heart,
honing discernment
as invaluable
in protecting me
and everyone else too.
How exactly is this direction
perceived and recognized?
The next best step
is distinguished
by instinct
and subtle, primal inklings,
notions from the divine,
whispered in my
consciousness,
navigating indubitably,
telling me
how and where to go,
if only I am alert enough
to pay attention
to those traffic signs
guiding, guarding,
and governing
my onward,
harmonious journey
in this tentative,
rather speculative manner
that I can fully trust.
