Flapping in the Wind (acrylic) by Polly Castor

A Bit Uphill at First

Flapping in the breeze
wind chimes rustle
in overly mild
January air,
not at all crisp
on my New Year’s face.
Moodily moist clouds
are a deep gray curtain
heightening the contrast
of a dazzling sun-drenched
foreground, casting
obtusely long shadows
of bare, lichen-covered
trees catapulting across
the pavement, too early
in the afternoon.
Wishing to sail and soar
we are home again,
poised to start,
making schedules
and proposing plans,
about to launch
our resolutions
in a big way.
Quietly sequestered,
cozily nested, ready,
vowing to be
devoted and focused–
we are beginning
to plod,
consecrated,
a bit uphill at first.
