How to heal in dark times

You seem very loving and happy. The way things are in this country and world right now, I can’t see how to love those who seem so violent and hateful and destructive right now. I need a real, practical way of seeing these people as God’s innocent children.  What do you do or think about them in these dark times? How do I help heal this insanity?

What a great question!

First, anything unGodlike is an imposition and not true in the kingdom of heaven, which we need to remember is “on earth” and right here “at hand.”

Secondly, focus on what you can do, on what is within your own sphere of influence.  Take the human action you are led to do. We can all do more than we do. Furthermore, we all need to work on ourselves, which should give us plenty of employment, since we all fall short in too many ways. “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”(Matthew 7:5)  Also, “What grander ambition is there than to maintain in yourselves what Jesus loved, and to know that your example, more than words, makes morals for mankind!” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 110:9)

I remind myself too, to have compassion like Jesus did with the man on the cross next to him. That man was not innocent, but was radically forgiven. “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” Forgiving them helps you, way more than it affects them, and allows you to refuse to carry their burdens.

I invoke Gamaliel all the time: “And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought: But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.” (Acts 5:38, 39) It is hard to believe this will come to nought, but with God, all things are possible.

What the Bible calls the carnal mind is not that original! Read hymn #258, which I posted here back in 2016. This kind of stuff is cyclical. Take a long view; history is full of people making bad choices, but Love wins every time. God is never absent or impotent.

These ideas are just off the top of my thought. I hope it helps. We are called to be the healer in the room into every room in which we enter. Lets respond that way, consistently, instead of react.

Thank you, Polly, for your uplifting Truth ideas in #16 (How to Help Heal Dark Times). The other week I was reading in Prose works and Mrs. Eddy’s writings on ‘contagion’ really helped me view the current activities more from a perspective of it being a “mental and moral contagion.” That really allowed me to move forward in prayerful thought. Perhaps it might benefit another of your readers. I refer to Miscellaneous Writings Page 228:21-29 in particular.
