I’ve been doing a lot of non-art work lately, so my time has been otherwise occupied.
Meanwhile, I want to keep my hand in making art, so I’m trying some new things, that are unlikely to be great but that I’m curious about anyway.
I do a lot of abstract conceptualism, but not usually as applied to people. There are so many ways to do this without being wedded to realism and without eyes in the wrong places! This is a frontier I haven’t much explored– so its time to venture towards some progress on this front.
I don’t consider either of these pieces successful, although I named them with their intention, so you can see what I was after. I share them to encourage you to try something you are not sure will work too. This is how we grow. You don’t get better if you don’t bravely step beyond your tried and true. It is often good to push yourself out of your comfort zone.
There are benefits– beyond just keeping the juices flowing– when doing a project that you are unsure about, and therefore, not that invested in. First, it sure is not boring (as you think “yikes” the whole time). Also, there is no pressure, so you can just let it rip; this freedom will sometimes (unlike here) surprise you with things you absolutely love. And maybe most importantly, this process can spawn other, better ideas.
So that’s happened for me. Now I better know what I want to do along this vein. I’ll keep the aspects that I like and let the rest go.

Wonderful! When I saw these, it took me right to a King Crimson album cover of my childhood “In the Wake of Poseidon”. It made my mellotron heart sing as I listened and looked at your “unlikely to be great” works instead of the cover. Followed by “I Talk To the Wind”, as I pondered both of your works. Thanks for sharing, took me to a special time.
