Still Life with Pattern (pastel) by Polly Castor

I’m in a group that I love called the Pastel Society of Maine.  You’ve seen me do a bunch of stuff with them in the past, for example painting with them (and cooking for them!) at their yearly Plein Air Retreat each June.

Recently I started a new thing for them where we give members a prompt to paint toward for that month, and then at the end of the month, we share via email the paintings members made. Three times a year, we are going to get on a zoom call together and discus them as well. (If you are a pastel artist and want to join us, you too can become a member for $40/year here.)

So the March the challenge was to paint a still life with a pattern in it. In this post you can see the one I did that was shared yesterday. It is 19″x25″ and done in pastel. I had fun doing it– especially the technical background, which was good practice for me, so I can apply that technique to something more abstract.

You can purchase the original here, or get prints or merchandise of the image here.

It is so unusual for me to paint this subject matter, I had to place it in my archives on my website, because it is neither abstract, nor a plein air, which are my usual two categories!

What do you think?
