Jean Gumpper is a very accomplished printmaker, working in a whole range of printing techniques ranging from mono printing to detailed reduction woodcuts. I not only completely respect her high level of skill in her process, but I also resonate with her subject matter, which includes the kinds of abstract detail in the landscape that I often take photos of myself.
Her work captures a complexity that is also completely serene, which is a balance hard to achieve. I think this is what I like most about her work. It is soothing and comforting in the best of ways, while honoring those overlooked slices of life we would all do well to be more mindful of.
You can see a short video here of how she layers her woodcuts.
Jean is a lecturer and artist in residence at Colorado College. You can see more of her work and find her gallery representation here on her website, or you can follow her here on Instagram.
