Dancing Kelp (mixed media) by Polly Castor

Alone Together

Like each leaf in a sea of kelp,
each fan in a baseball stadium
each note in a concerto
each kernel on a cob of corn
is distinct but colluding
Like each star in the constellation
each aspen on the mountainside
each cobble in the old road
each bead in the necklace
is solitary but in conjunction
Like each brick in the wall
each blade on the lawn
each tooth in the smile
each word in the paragraph
is individual but integrated
Like each note in a melody
each spoke in a wheel
each bird in a flock
each bee in a hive
is a fraction of a bigger whole
Like each drop in the ocean
each shell on the beach
each boat in the marina
each flower on the magnolia
is separately united in shared experience
as threads woven into the same tapestry
as numbers in the same equation
as ballerinas collaborating on the same stage
as different refrains in the same song
as various voices in the same conversation
as participants in collective communion
we are disparate, solitary, and alone, yes,
but we can’t avoid the implicit fact
that we are also always together as one.

Dancing kelp? Or seeds of life?
Kelp has a much darker meaning through my filters.

Kelp is a happy home for many creatures. And there are many kinds.

This poem is lovely, insightful. The pastel is fabulous. Reminds me of some of Georgia O’Keefe’s flower paintings.
