Working on Visual Texture in Pastel

When people think of my artwork, probably they first think about saturated, vibrant color, then may think about abstract conceptualism and the metaphysics behind what I paint, but thirdly, texture is also a hallmark of my work.

Some mediums it comes naturally, like in knitting, pottery, and acrylics. But pastels? Not so much. You have to work at it and visual texture in pastel is born of work and experience.

Here are three recent studies of mine, where I am doing just that. I’ll have a lot of painting opportunities coming up this summer, so for now I’ve been working on other things, only getting a few studies done in between. But what I learned in these experiments will add to my repertoire, and will come to bear on the next real pieces I do.
