Welcome Home (Poem by Polly Castor)

Welcome Home

Before we were married
we had a long distance relationship,
and I used to ask if he missed me.
He did not, citing his completeness
independence, and self-sufficiency.
Did you even notice I was gone,
I would fish, but no, he was
simply happy to see me when he did.

We’ve been married over 27 years
and I just returned from
being gone at camp for a week,
leaving him behind
to pursue his own projects.
As I burrowed my head
into that well worn,
comfy spot on his shoulder,
he says, oh he missed me,
and I feel so shiny and replete
because our individual wholeness
has quietly grown and doubled
to include each other now.

What a sweet guy. I like this, letting each other go but also that renewed happiness when you’re back together. Nice, Polly. Happy for you both!
