I was inspired to invite my husband on an unusual walk today, where we both agreed in advance that we would not say one word for the entire walk. We are of a marriage of many words, maybe too many, given how wonderful this wordless walk was! Friends of mine with taciturn husbands often marvel at stories of my husband and I keeping each other up too late talking.
But when there are so many words it is also easy to develop bad habits of interrupting or sharing opinions, and you loose sight somewhat of the fact that our only real communication comes straight from God. The day was lovely. I took the radiant pictures below, but mostly we gazed, held hands, danced a bit in the leaf litter under a cathedral of golden branches, and sat closely to watch reflections alter with an occasional breeze while a duck family paddled by.
We marveled at the color of the mountain laurel leaves by passing one back and forth between us. Out without a word in all that glory we communicated better than we ever do with them. This could be an important lesson for us. You might want to give it a try with a loved one, it is easier and more enjoyable that you might think. I hope we do this more! Enjoy the vibrant photos below…
