You long time blog readers know I adore Creative Arts Camp on the shores of Long Lake in Maine. I’ve gone consecutively every end of August for 19 years, only missing when it was cancelled because of the pandemic in 2020. I love that community and am deeply invested in it. Where spirituality and art intersect is my very sweetest spot, and so many of you have endeared yourselves to me there, having that in common.
Since they didn’t ask me to teach this year, and this year’s visual arts offerings are slim in favor of theater, music, and writing, I had assumed I would apply to be an artist-in residence again. But in praying about it and wrangling with it a bit, I feel many visual artists are underserved by this year’s offerings, and will want the artist in residence position as well. I have had that honor twice recently, and it is clear to me that it is someone else’s turn.
As the Creative Arts Camp director position is to be refilled this year, and as many of you have hoped I would apply, I’ll also mention here that I decided last time it was open not to do that. I have strong leadership skills, wide artistic expertise, inspirational teaching capabilities, and extensive community building abilities. All that together with my love for the vast potential (and shared history) of this program, as well as for each individual attending, would make me a good candidate. However, I am abysmal at administrative work, so don’t desire to frustrate any of us with that weak link.
I have about six great ideas of topics to teach there that I think you would really enjoy, so maybe I’ll see you next year? I’ll miss being with you, hearing the loons, and swimming to Cherry Island. Give each other big, long hugs for me, and please find other ways to keep in touch!
