I’ve been thinking about our precious natural resources and their plunder, which led me to thinking about mining, the important protections to prevent its abuse, squandering and degrading the environment, contrasting with its possibly thoughtfully sustainable use. This painting started off with a navy sky and was much more brooding and negative, focusing on mismanagement and scarcity.
In order to increase the perception that we are looking and a slice of landscape going underground in this painting, I changed the navy sky to this present light colored one. That process ended with me contemplating more appropriate paths forward in the mining theme, defending and utilizing all that is good and pure and beautiful, which includes as well all the metaphors for mining, like digging deep into the self for what is authentic and true.

My first thought:
What lies beneath?and then came Deut 33:27
The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms:
thank you Polly x

I understand you wanting to have a positive message about our environment, but with the news that coal mining is going to be ramping up, I am trying not to see it as mining taking a step back and to heck with the quality of air we breathe. I am very concerned with all of our natural resources in the next few years. That said, your painting is wonderful and the colors are beautiful.

I feel this to, and not only coal mining. That concern is where this comes from, but I felt I needed to take it higher. I’m continuing to pray about this.
