My artist journals are where I try out new ideas, like new compositional ideas, new color combinations, new materials, new ways to mix media, new mark making combinations, new layering methods, new concepts, etc.

The casein here is a new media for me. It is quite a lot like gouache, but it dries to permanent, which I can be positive. (You can rewet gouache, which is also good, since it makes dry rewet-able pans easily portable to travel with.) Casein wet out of the tube is easy to mix and feels in consistency more like acrylic, however it has a more matte feel from its milky ingredients, rather than the polymer feel of acrylic.

I hope you enjoy the images you see in this post. Working in my artist journals is a central aspect of my artist practice. I encourage you to start one as well, even if it is just a place to doodle around. It is amazing to watch them fill up and accrue. Working in an artist journal is very centering and meditative. It is great to have a place where you spend quality time with yourself.

I love your recent acrylic painting from your journal. To me it looks like bright green spring trees blooming brightly in purple rain. A true feeling of spring. Helena

Unless it is just me, I think I see an “edge sharpening” effect with this new media. My computer? Camera? I don’t know but I detect a slightly improved edge contrast thing going on here. Impactful.

Love the art – I spent some quality time with each one, so thanks for sharing yours!
