I’m so Glad We Have a Day to Celebrate You!

Far off
on the other edge of the country
our older daughter finishes
going around the sun once more
and orbits happily on
with her own apartment
full of my art
and a good grown-up job
making a great contribution
living out her ideals
learning a lot
maintaining herself independently
making new friends and keeping the old
her wits are sharp
and her muscles toned
her very being is spiritually honed
with joy on her face
she’s suffused with ideas
fun-loving, beautiful,
caring about others,
and well dressed too
with organic food in her fridge
surrounded by books
church going, bike riding,
deep thinking and unfettered
how can I begin to say
how grateful
and proud
I am
of you?
Each year is precious,
measuring limitless good
unfolding
with you immersed
all through it.
You are a marvel
that I cherish
at the center of my soul.
