Restaurant Recommendation: Sweet Basil in Needham, Mass

Sweet Basil restaurant

Today I was in Needham, Massachusetts while our youngest spent the day in classes at Olin College and had an appointment in the Admissions office. I spent the morning in the local Christian Science Reading Room cooling my jets spiritually about the whole college application process, and the afternoon found me in the public library reading my books in their big, comfy chairs. In-between, I tried a wonderful restaurant I think you’d like, so I am sharing it here.

I have to give Siri, the disembodied voice on my smart phone, all the credit for this find. Do you ever just ask your phone for “good restaurants near here”? It usually works great but never better than today. Sweet Basil came up with high stars (5) and low dollar signs (2) which is an all too rare combination.

This place is casual and homey–verging on seedy– complete with handmade pottery that wouldn’t even get honored with a spot in my reject pile. But the menu choices are wonderful. I had the fish special of the day, which was swordfish served with black bean ragu and roasted broccolini. It was absolutely fabulous and only $13.00. However, woe unto you if coffee, tea, or dessert is imperative for you, since they do not serve them! But don’t miss the upscale second hand clothing shop across the street called Second Time Around where I drooled over a large rack of sumptuous cashmere…

Try out this special spot if you are anywhere near the area. I’m sure glad I did, and I hope to come back again sometime.
